Interview with Godbliss

Nahila S – When and how did you start MCing?

Godbliss – I started hiphop in the late 80’s to early 90’s my mother was a rapper in the 70’s when hiphop wasn’t even on wax yet and my father was a Dj who used to battle Kool Herc the godfather of hiphop so this music was in my DNA.

Nahila S – Where does the name Godbliss come from?

Godbliss – Well my rap name was MC Bliss back in the days but in 1992 I became a member of the 5% Nation of Gods and Earths and got knowledge of my history and I started teaching in the streets of the Bronx, so people would start calling me the God Bliss, so I took the “the” off and just said from now on my name is Godbliss, lol its not a name in the dictionary but I put two words of meaning together and gave it my own meaning so Godbliss means “supreme happiness”.

Nahila S – What or who were your early influences?

Godbliss – My influences were Rakim, Big Daddy Kane, Kool G. Rap, Krs One.

Nahila S – You used to rap battle and have never lost one! What do you keep from this experience and what skills does it require for you to be good into it?

Godbliss – Yeah my battle rap record was 89 wins – 0 loses, it taught me to learn how to combat different styles cause all of my opponents brought something new to the table, I wish i didn’t retire cause now battle rap is very popular.

Nahila S – To date what are your best career achievements?

Godbliss – I think my best achievements have happen recent this year I was able to do songs with some of the lyricist in hiphop history K-rino who is to me the best lyricist from the southwest, I also did songs with Inspectah Deck who is from the best group in hiphop history Wu-tang clan, I also did songs with the godfather of gangster rap on the Eastcoast Kool G Rap, also Grand Daddy I.U. the smooth assassin.

Nahila S – What do you have to say about the state of Hip Hop today?

Godbliss – The state of hiphop is in a very bad state now having lyrical skills is not the focal point anymore and really anybody even withing real talent can do it, cause corporate American mess it up, when I was young the rappers back then used to teach me they use to push me to have more intellect, now the rappers of dumb down and the youth is suffering from it now the youth is going backwards mentally.

Nahila S – What positive does your passion for music bring you?

Godbliss – Music motivates me to uplift people and make people happy. Music has always been a major part of culture in every society so it brings joy to me I will do music until I physically can’t do it no more.

Nahila S – What are you current projects?

Godbliss – I’m working on my new album, my second album called the Crucible and I’m planning to drop that next year along with an Ep right after called God Cloth.

Nahila S – As a conclusion what advise would you give to someone willing to start MCing or what message would you like to pass on?

Godbliss – My advice is to be themselves don’t try to clone any other rapper’s style and to always use lyrical ability and work on there stage performance which is also vital.
